Key Findings

Lessons learned

Lessons learned from the pilot study in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand include:

  • The release of super-sterile mosquitoes reduced populations of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
  • Baseline information about the sterility and mating competitiveness of sterilised males is needed to inform strategies for future releases.
  • Community and public engagement in field trials are key to the success.
  • Tools for monitoring mosquito populations are necessary for project evaluation and for demonstrating the success of the intervention.
  • If the sterile mosquito technique programme in Thailand is to be continued, a mosquito mass-rearing facility will be required.
  • Further research is needed to determine whether the approach has an impact on the diseases that these mosquitoes transmit.
